By Graham Smith · 01 Dec 2014
Don Bate bought his 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe SLX diesel manual in 2011 when it had done 25,000 km. It has now done 72,000 km, 30,000 of which have been towing his 1750 kg caravan. Seven-seat 4WD for towing?
Answered by Paul Gover · 13 Apr 2015

I rate the Colorado ahead of the Isuzu but, if you can make do with something that will tow 2500kg rather than 3000kg, also look at a Hyundai Santa Fe as I give it The Tick.

Good option for boat towing?
Answered by Paul Gover · 19 Jan 2015

Comparing utes and SUVs is tough. I get complaints from Grand Cherokee owners, the HiLux is being replaced soon and the Outlander is nothing special. The Colorado SUV is probably best for you but drive a Hyundai Santa Fe before you commit.

Kia Carnival or VW Multivan?
Answered by Paul Gover · 04 Aug 2014

Don’t judge the Carnival by the badge, as it definitely gets The Tick. The The Multivan is also far more practical than any SUV, as you will find when you try to load all the stuff that comes with four youngsters. If you absolutely must play the SUV game, go for a Hyundai Santa Fe, also a Tick winner.

Hyundai Santa Fe 2014: Petrol or diesel?

There is also a petrol-engined Santa Fe. The crossover point for getting the money back on diesel power is about 30,000km a year.

Mazda CX-5: Is it a good replacement for a CX-7?
Answered by Paul Gover · 29 Sep 2014

You will struggle for space in a CX-5 as it's smaller than the CX-7. I would go for a Hyundai Santa Fe, which gets The Tick with seven seats, quality, a five-year warranty and lifetime capped-price service costs.

Hyundai Santa Fe 2011: Is the diesel good for towing?
Answered by Graham Smith · 15 May 2015

You are well within the rated towing capacity with trailer brakes, so the vehicle should be able to handle the hills as long as you approach them sensibly by being in the appropriate gear before you start climbing and don't try and rush it. If you are unsure of the weight of the fully loaded trailer have it weighed at a weighbridge.

Hyundai Santa Fe 2011: Dashboard lights during the day?
Answered by Graham Smith · 16 Jan 2015

We checked and you are correct, the dash lights should be on during the day and they should be brighter than they are in darker conditions or at night.

I drove an updated Santa Fe a couple of weeks ago. It's impressive. I like the size, quality, five-year warranty and how the suspension has been tweaked for Australia.

Diesel seven seater for towing

The Santa Fe gets The Tick, and several friends are very happy with new ones. Kia has also just totally overhauled the Sorento and that's definitely worth a test drive.
