You're right a new gearbox would fix the problem and you should press Ford to do that. We understand the clutch design has been changed and the new clutches don't appear to have the same problem.
The car is going into 'limp home' mode, which suggests there is something amiss with the electronics of the engine management system, possibly the ECU or a sensor supplying it with information. It needs to be sorted out by the dealer; it's not good enough to tell you to keep bringing it back when it happens. By doing that they're hoping to eventually stumble on the cause of the problem rather than investigate the cause and find a solution. If you can't get any sense out of the dealer go directly to Ford's customer assistance service on 13 3673.
The Focus RS was a sellout in small numbers so the value should still be strong. However, there is an all-new model with more appeal next year so it will seriously devalue your car.
I would want the dealer to check the transmission. It's a dual-clutch auto and they have been known to vibrate in the Focus under load like you describe.
Stephen Kruk of Ford replies: "We've recently experienced some customer concerns regarding Focus and Fiesta transmissions. We have been working with those customers to address each of their issues on a case-by-case basis. Ford would encourage customers who are experiencing any issues to speak to their local dealer so we can resolve the issue."
If it's a 2011 model that's what it is no matter when it was registered. The extended warranty should cover you in the event the transmission gets any worse. Given what you say is happening I would keep a close eye on it and, if you feel there is a problem take it to a dealer and have it checked.
I can understand your frustration, but you can only bear with it for the moment, as Ford is attempting to fix the issue. It's when a company stops trying to fix a dud product that you have some power to demand more action. In this case, your options are limited. The only thing you could do is express your frustration in a way that they are left in no doubt about it.
No one should buy a car as a potential investment, as nothing these days is going to appreciate like a Falcon GTHO Phase 3. Far better that you buy the RS to enjoy it.
