The Ford Mustang Mach-E Select from America (via Mexico) is the base version of Ford’s first electric vehicle (EV) in Australia. Prices start from $65,990 before on-road costs.

For the 2026 facelift, this model gains the trick LED headlights as per its more expensive siblings, as well as a heat pump to boost efficiency, and maintains a long list of standard items.

These include artificial leather upholstery, heated and powered front seats, a panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, a 15.5-inch touchscreen, 360-degree-view camera, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 10-speaker premium audio, a wireless charger, a powered tailgate and 19-inch alloys. Updates include a switch from a rotary-dial transmission selector to a column shift arrangement and improved suspension to improve the ride.

On the safety front, you’ll find 10 airbags – dual front, front-centre, a driver’s knee, front-side, rear-side and full-length curtain/head – advanced driver-assist safety (ADAS) tech such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with intersection assist, reverse brake-assist, post-impact braking, lane-keep aid, lane-departure warning, evasive-steer assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, as well as traffic-sign recognition and tyre pressure monitors. The Select also has a five-star ANCAP crash-test safety rating. Note there is no spare wheel, just a tyre-inflation kit.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Select has a rear-mounted electric motor, driving the rear wheels via a single-speed reduction gear transmission. It makes 2162W of power and 525Nm of torque, for a 0-100km/h sprint time of a respectable 6.2 seconds, on the way to a 180km/h top speed. Power is up slightly from the pre-facelift version, due to a in-house electric motor.

Being the base grade, it is fitted with the smaller of the two battery options. This is a 73kWh (useable) Lithium Ferro phosphate (LFP) battery, for 470km of WLTP driving range. The official European consumption average is 18.5kWh/100km.

Byron started his motoring journalism career when he joined John Mellor in 1997 before becoming a freelance motoring writer two years later. He wrote for several motoring publications and was ABC Youth radio Triple J's "all things automotive" correspondent from 2001 to 2003. He rejoined John Mellor in early 2003 and has been with GoAutoMedia as a senior product and industry journalist ever since. With an eye for detail and a vast knowledge base of both new and used cars Byron lives and breathes motoring. His encyclopedic knowledge of cars was acquired from childhood by reading just about every issue of every car magazine ever to hit a newsstand in Australia. The child Byron was the consummate car spotter, devoured and collected anything written about cars that he could lay his hands on and by nine had driven more imaginary miles at the wheel of the family Ford Falcon in the driveway at home than many people drive in a lifetime. The teenage Byron filled in the agonising years leading up to getting his driver's license by reading the words of the leading motoring editors of the country and learning what they look for in a car and how to write it. In short, Byron loves cars and knows pretty much all there is to know about every vehicle released during his lifetime as well as most of the ones that were around before then.
