The SX grade sits at the mid-point of the Corolla hatch line-up, and is available only with an automatic transmission for $26,000.
Visually, the SX stands out from the grades below it with a tough looking body kit incorporating side skirts and sporty front and rear bumpers, plus tinted windows. Standard features include a 7.0-inch screen with sat nav, a reversing camera, six-speaker stereo with CD player, rear parking sensors, air-conditioning and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The SX is front-wheel drive and has a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making a competent 103kW/173Nm. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is smooth but isn’t the most responsive automatic out there.
The SX will run on 91 RON unleaded and Toyota says it uses 6.1L/100km on the combined (urban, extra-urban) fuel economy cycle.
The SX hatch is made in Japan and scored the maximum five-star ANCAP rating. A 2017 update made advanced safety equipment such as AEB available for the first time, and this can be optioned on the SX grade.
