The Peugeot 4008 made its debut in Australia in 2012 as the French brand’s first serious attempt at a mid-size SUV, designed to tap into the booming demand for compact crossovers. Based on the Mitsubishi ASX platform as part of a joint venture, the 4008 shared mechanicals with its Japanese cousin but featured unique Peugeot styling, including a bold grille and slick European design cues.
Available in front- and all-wheel drive, the 4008 was offered with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and CVT transmission. While it lacked some of the refinement and dynamic prowess of Peugeot’s hatchbacks, buyers appreciated its practicality, elevated driving position and standout looks. However, limited engine choices and an ageing platform eventually held it back from broader success.
By 2017, Peugeot Australia phased out the 4008 in favour of the newer, in-house-designed 3008 and 5008 SUVs. Internationally, it was also known as the Citroën C4 Aircross and Mitsubishi RVR in various markets.
The line-up currently starts at $23,870 for the 4008 Active (4x2) and ranges through to $32,010 for the range-topping 4008 Active (4x2).
You need to simplify your needs and wants. Most, if not all new cars have the sort of features you want. The more pressing issue is the choice of SUV or hatch. While a hatch might be best for your city needs, it probably wouldn't suit your camping needs, so I would rule that out and focus on a compact SUV. Of all the models you have looked at I would select the Suzuki Grand Vitara.
