There were a lot of diff problems with the BA/BF Falcon and Ford was replacing them with monotonous regularity. On cars with higher kays they would sometimes fit a diff they’d removed from another car and had checked, so don’t be surprised that it happened with your car. If the warranty period is not yet up you might get some help from Ford, although I very much doubt they would refund your money or even offer financial compensation. Have a diff specialist assess your car and advise on what they can do to fix it.
We haven’t had any other reports like yours, perhaps that’s because yours is an unusual situation and not everyone has to back up an incline on a regular basis. You might have been better off with an auto trans in your situation.
Little is known about the Rockstone brand, so it's not possible to advise on their safety or potential life. There is no doubt, however, that you would be compromising somewhere, either in the performance, noise, ride comfort, or life. The best advice is to shop around for a known brand of tyre that still gives you a saving over the Goodyears.
Fading usually happens when plasticizers migrate out of the plastic, and is accelerated when the car is exposed to the sun for long periods of time, but we haven't received any other reports of the dash fading on Falcons. Make sure the car is parked out of the sun when your son is away, that was the fading should be reduced, and using a product like Armor All should help maintain the colour in the dash.
Great advice that everyone who has complained about this problem should follow.
There are issues relating to the five-speed auto and others relating to the ZF six-speed. They are different issues and not related. Yours is the five-speed and the hard shifts are a concern, but as you say Ford repaired yours under warranty.
Hard shifting has been on ongoing issue with the ZF auto, and like you say, other owners have had the Ford fix of a recal of the computer without any lasting success.
It's usual that recalls are marked in the Service Book and with a sticker in the engine bay, but I'm sure any dealer would be happy to check your car for you. As for checking it for problems that might need fixing, you could have the NRMA do it, but any problem needing fixing should be evident to you.
It's really not good enough, but at least Ford fixed the car under warranty. It's not possible for me to say whether the Commodore will be any better; all cars are subject to failures. Other than the Commodore it's difficult to find a car that matches the XR6 for price, size and performance. Performance models of the sort that I would recommend, BMW 135i or 330i, Lexus is250, are generally smaller and more expensive, and may not suit your needs.
I WOULD suggest you approach Ford through your dealer for part compensation for having it fixed. If that doesn't get you anywhere, take it to an auto electrician and get it fixed rather than getting into a frustrating and ultimately futile fight with Ford.
