As its name implies, the Golf Alltrack sends drive to all four wheels via Volkswagen's '4Motion' permanent all-wheel-drive system.

Power is delivered via a 1.8-litre (132kW/280Nm) turbo-petrol four, or 2.0-litre (135kW/380Nm) turbo-diesel four, with the petrol engine backed up by a six-speed 'DSG' dual clutch auto, and the diesel matched with a seven-speed DSG.

The Alltrack 132TSI is available in petrol form only for $35,990 drive-away (MSRP $34,490), while the Premium version is offered in 132TSI petrol at $39,990 drive-away (MSRP $38,490) and 135TDI diesel form for $42,490 drive-away (MSRP $40,990). And despite its more macho appearance, and SUV-focused rubber, the Alltrack matches the Golf hatch and wagon for refinement and dynamic response.

Standard kit includes dual-zone climate control air, keyless entry and start, leather-trimmed steering wheel, cruise control, new 8.0-inch multimedia screen, LED interior ambient lighting, rear-view camera, seven airbags, a fatigue-detection system, AEB, 17-inch alloys, front fog lights, auto headlights and wipers, parking sensors, as well as LED tail-lights and daytime running lights.

Step up to the Premium grade and you'll be in receipt of 'Comfort Sport' (heated) front seats, 'leather appointed' upholstery, LED headlights, and more.

Based on the Golf wagon, even with the 60/40 split folding rear seats up the Alltrack boasts a hefty 1270 litres of load space, growing to a cavernous 1620 litres with the second-row seats folded.

As a small boy James often sat on a lounge with three shoes in front of him, a ruler between the cushions, and a circular drinks tray in his hands. He would then play ‘drivings’, happily heading to destinations unknown for hours on end. He’s since owned many cars, raced a few, and driven (literally) thousands of them at all points of the globe. He’s steered around and across Australia multiple times, spent time as an advanced driving instructor, and had the opportunity to experience rare and valuable classics here and overseas. His time in motoring journalism has included stints at national and international titles including Motor, Wheels and TopGear, and when asked to nominate a career highlight, James says interviewing industry legend Gordon Murray, in the paddock at the 1989 Australian Formula One Grand Prix was amazing, especially as Murray waived away a hovering Ayrton Senna to complete the conversation. As Deputy Editor, James manages everything from sub-editing to back-end content while creating written and video product reviews.
