The range-topping model in MG’s new electric small car line-up is the MG4 Essence 77. Priced from $55,990 (plus on-road costs) this Mazda 3-sized hatch is the most expensive option but still one of the more affordable EVs on sale today.

The Essence 77 is equipped with LED lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch digital instrument panel, 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, a six-speaker sound system, wireless smartphone charging pad, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and leather and fabric trim.

The interior is simplistic in design, with only the two digital screens and a handful of buttons. But the layout of the batteries does offer good space inside the cabin, although rear occupants miss out on any creature comforts like cup holders or arm rests.

The Essence 77 is powered by a punchy 180kW rear-mounted electric motor that drives the rear wheels. It makes for sprightly performance and agile handling.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
