Nikki Cousins and Peter Anderson road test and review the 2016 Jaguar F-Pace First Edition diesel, with specs, fuel consumption and verdict.

Ten years ago the idea of Jaguar building an SUV would have seemed like Vinnie Jones making a Rom Com, and the die hards certainly held their breath once word got out that one was on the way.

When Jaguar whipped the covers off the F-Pace last year, these Tweed enthusiasts breathed a sigh of relief while the rest of the world responded with rapturous applause.

Jag design boss Ian Callum had done it again, blending SUV proportions with contemporary Jaguar style to give premium buyers a fresh alternative to the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and the still-fresh Mercedes GLC.

The limited-edition First Edition currently sits at the top of the five-seat F-Pace range, giving buyers an idea of what’s possible if they take a stroll through the lengthy options list.

This also makes it the perfect choice for the Peter and Nikki Torquing Heads treatment, as any car needs to be on its best behaviour to get their thumbs up.

Plus: Richard Berry takes a detailed look at the F-Pace R-Sport 20d.

Peter grew up in a house in Western Sydney where automotive passion extended to white Sigmas and Magnas. At school he discovered "those" magazines that weren't to be found in the house. Magazines that offered him the chance to sit in the driver's seat of cars he’d never even heard of let alone seen. His path to rebellion was set - he would love cars, know cars and want to write about cars, much to his family’s disgust. They wanted him to be a teacher. He bought a series of terrible cars and lusted after Ford Escort Cosworths, the Alfa Romeo 164 Q and occasionally kicked himself for selling his 1977 Alfa GTV. From 1.0-litre three cylinders to roaring V12s, Peter has driven them all and can't wait to tell you all about it.
