The Tank 500 Ultra is the flagship model in the entire GWM range for now.

Like the base Lux, it is powered by the same hybrid powertrain.

This means that under the bulky bonnet is a 180kW/380Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. It is paired to a 78kW/268Nm electric motor and battery pack. The combined power and torque outputs are 255kW and 648Nm, respectively.

Drive is sent to either the back or both axles via a nine-speed automatic. You’ll find the usual 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low-range modes, along with nine drive settings according to conditions.

GWM says the official combined fuel consumption is 8.5L/100km.

Above and beyond the $66,490-drive-away Lux’s specification (that includes auto-levelling LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, a sunroof, side steps, powered and heated front seats, a 360-degree view camera set-up, electric rear diff lock and a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation cluster), the Ultra (from $73,990-driveaway) boasts Nappa leather, a panoramic sunroof, retractable side steps, a head-up display, vented and massaging front seats with memory, vented second-row seats, powered third-row bench, 12-speaker premium audio, double-layered glass, noise-cancelling tech, a front diff lock, ambient lighting and more.

Autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind-spot monitor, lane-support systems and front/rear cross-traffic alert are also fitted.

The Tank 500 employs body-on-frame construction, with a double-wishbone independent coil sprung set-up up front and multi-link live axle coil sprung suspension out back. Towing capacity is 3000kg braked and 750kg unbraked. It also provides effective off-road clearances.

Contributing Journalist
Byron started his motoring journalism career when he joined John Mellor in 1997 before becoming a freelance motoring writer two years later. He wrote for several motoring publications and was ABC Youth radio Triple J's "all things automotive" correspondent from 2001 to 2003. He rejoined John Mellor in early 2003 and has been with GoAutoMedia as a senior product and industry journalist ever since. With an eye for detail and a vast knowledge base of both new and used cars Byron lives and breathes motoring. His encyclopedic knowledge of cars was acquired from childhood by reading just about every issue of every car magazine ever to hit a newsstand in Australia. The child Byron was the consummate car spotter, devoured and collected anything written about cars that he could lay his hands on and by nine had driven more imaginary miles at the wheel of the family Ford Falcon in the driveway at home than many people drive in a lifetime. The teenage Byron filled in the agonising years leading up to getting his driver's license by reading the words of the leading motoring editors of the country and learning what they look for in a car and how to write it. In short, Byron loves cars and knows pretty much all there is to know about every vehicle released during his lifetime as well as most of the ones that were around before then.
