Mazda has just unveiled the Mazda 6 sedan at the Moscow motor show and is backing it up with the wagon in Paris.
Like the wagon, the sedan will showcase Mazda’s new SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine, which is available in Europe in two tune levels -- although there's no word yet on which we'll get here. Also on the overseas menu are the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 and SKYACTIV-G 2.5 direct injection petrol engines.
At 2.5-litres the newest petrol engine available is bigger than Skyactiv unit from the Mazda3 and CX-5 and puts out a 141kW/256Nm. No details are given for the turbo diesel, though there's no doubt this will be the formidable oiler from the CX-5, a 2.2-litre unit good for 129kW/420Nm.
The new Mazda6 gets here early next year in sedan and wagon form, the lines of the former going some way to address the disappointment that there'll be no hatch this time, always the best-selling shape in Australia. In the preliminary details released this morning, much is made of improved NVH levels, a bugbear of the previous cars, and such refinements as a new suspension and electric steering.
Other items in the fruit bowl include stop/start, highbeam control that uses a sensor to detect on-coming vehicles, hill launch assist, hazard light activating emergency stop assist and Rear Vehicle Monitoring that detects cars approaching from behind or driving in the blind spot on either side. Sales of the All-New Mazda6 will begin in Europe later this year and in Australia during the first quarter of 2013.
