Australian new-car sales had another bumper month, with about 106,000 vehicles landing in driveways in September.

Diesel power is still a popular choice with buyers despite the Federal Government’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) that is designed to penalise heavy polluting vehicles.

The usual suspects dominated the top sellers with the Toyota HiLux taking top spot with 5047 sales, followed by the Ford Ranger (4867) and the Tesla Model Y (3927).

Toyota’s soon to be replaced RAV4 slid down the sales charts to fifth spot with 2554, and was outsold by the diesel-powered Ford Everest (2558).

Isuzu’s D-Max was the only other ute in the top 10 with 1989 sales with the plug-in hybrid BYD Shark 6 missing out and maintaining its run rate of about 1200 units a month.

The budget-friendly Chery Tiggo 4 (2048) and GWM Haval Jolion (1881) SUVs made their mark in September.

BYD’s fully electric Sealion 7 was the second best-selling EV in the country after moving 1887 units.

The rise of new Chinese brands has seen usual top 10 stalwarts from Kia, Mazda and Hyundai drop out of the top 10.

Despite this, all three makers sold well finishing in third, fourth and fifth respectively in total sales by brand in the past month.

It was a strong month for electric vehicle sales, with the battery-powered machines accounting for 11.3 per cent of total sales.  This boosted the yearly percentage to 8.1.

This sales surge was driven mostly by BYD and Tesla, with Hyundai, Kia, MG and Geely chipping in with solid performances.

Luxury brands had a strong month with Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz all delivering positive growth.

Despite the influx of new Chinese brands, most have failed to set the sales charts alight.

Deepal (95 sales), Geely (461), JAC (110), Leapmotor (71) and Zeekr (121) all delivered modest sales.
