Volvo XC60 2017: Exccessive brake pad wear
By Graham Smith · 25 Jan 2019

I have been quoted $2000 by the dealer service team to replace brake pads and discs on my 2017 Volvo XC60. Seems excessive based on what I can find online. Would really appreciate some guidance.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class 2014: Smoking
By Graham Smith · 25 Jan 2019

My 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class has started smoking quite badly. There is no smell, or warning lights on the dash. I checked the oil and water levels and there is way too much in both. Checked a month ago and they were at the correct levels.

Nissan Pulsar 2001: Check engine light
By Graham Smith · 25 Jan 2019

In late-December I was driving my 2001 Nissan Pulsar Q sedan up a gradual incline with the A/C on, and soon noticed that the "check engine" warning light had come on.

I slowed down and turned off the A/C, and the light disappeared after about a minute. A week later, I was driving up the same incline in hot conditions with the A/C off this time, and the light still came on, and went away soon after. The water, oil and coolant levels are all as they should be, so could this be perhaps a fault with the car's computer regarding its ability to detect potential engine issues?

Ford Focus 2008: Broken window regulator
By Graham Smith · 25 Jan 2019

Maree has a 2008 Ford Focus Cabriolet Convertible. The rear passenger side window has a broken regulator. On getting the dealer to take it out it appears to only have a broken cable. The dealer cannot source a replacement part so we went to Campbellfield Ford head office who advised us that someone would get back to us in 72 hours working time. I find this a ridiculous time frame.

The dealer also advised us to see if we could find a part and the best we could do is a company in Brisbane who said if we send them the part they will fix it for – wait for it, $550. This is very unsatisfactory, surely Ford must have a spare part or be able to fix the cable. The car is only 10 years old.

I hope you can help us.

Volkswagen Multivan 2010: Engine replacement or rebuild?
By Graham Smith · 25 Jan 2019

Our 2010 VW Multivan broke down in Sydney, but we live in Canberra. The car is at an NRMA workshop in Hornsby. They have told us we either need a full rebuild or a new engine, with both quoted at approximately $10,500. I feel like we have a gun at our heads and I am not sure how I can check we are getting the right advice.

Can you help?

Dealer damaged my car
By Graham Smith · 18 Jan 2019

In mid-January my new Honda HR-V RS had its 1000 km service. The service centre supervisor phoned to inform me that it was ready for pick up, but 10 min later I was phoned again and informed that a trolley of tyres had accidently rolled into my driver side door causing significant damage. They said that manager would call me on Monday, but that they are looking at replacing the whole door.

I am extremely upset about the damage to my new $36,000 car. Is this reasonable action to be taken by Honda, or should my car be replaced?

When I try to start my 2004 Holden Commodore it will kick over, but then die. When I try to start it again, it shuts down. If I take the key out, lock the car and open it again, it will restart. This has happened a couple of times. What is the problem?
