Carsguide Contributing Journalist Mark Oastler had this to say at the time: The Cannon Alpha Ultra PHEV combines five-star safety, a confident warranty, lavish luxury and short-haul electric driving for a competitive price. However, from a pure workhorse perspective, its class-benchmark 3500kg tow rating is offset by a modest payload limit, plus an awkward spare tyre location which could be a deal-breaker for some tradies as it compromises working floor space and the securing of loads.

The 2026 GWM Cannon Alpha carries a braked towing capacity of up to 3500 Kg, but check to ensure this applies to the configuration you're considering.
The GWM Cannon Alpha 2026 prices range from $50,490 for the basic trim level Dual Cab Lux (4X4) to $66,990 for the top of the range Dual Cab Ultra Phev (4X4).
'Marble White' paint is standard for the GWM Cannon Alpha range. Metallic paint, including 'Crystal Black', 'Storm Grey', 'Onyx Silver' and 'Lunar Red' costs an extra $595.
At a minimum all Cannon Alphas feature synthetic leather seats, with six-way electric adjustment for the driver and four-way electric adjustment on the front passenger seat, while upper spec Alphas get leather-accented seats, which are eight-way power-adjustable for the driver (plus position memory and lumbar support) and six-way power-adjustable for the front passenger.
All Cannon Alphas have dual zone climate control, front and rear row USB outlets, plus a 12.3-inch digital cluster as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Upper spec Alphas get a 14.6-inch multimedia screen.
These utes have an overhauled centre console with two new larger tablet-style screens surrounded by woodgrain-style trim. Upper-spec Alphas have a new three-spoke synthetic leather-accented steering wheel and soft front and rear seats.
The GWM Cannon Alpha range includes a choice of 2.4L turbo-diesel engine, 2.0L turbo-petrol hybrid or 2.0L turbo petrol plug-in hybrid.

The GWM Cannon Alpha's tub is 1500mm long, 1520mm wide (1100mm between the wheel arches) and 500mm deep. Turbo-diesel variants have an 821kg maximum payload while the petrol plug-in hybrid EV can take 685kg. Towing capacity is 750kg (unbraked trailer) and 3500kg (braked).
