Ford Territory recall
By Neil McDonald · 27 Mar 2009
The recall affects 83,534 Territorys in Australia, 7739 in New Zealand, 3612 in South Africa and about 60 in Thailand and Brunei.Details of the defect were uncovered by Carsguide after more than 15 customers reported brake failures to our Ask Smithy guru, Graham Smith.Ask Smithy, Daily Telegraph, March 27, 2009.Carsguide answers your questions about the Ford Territory recallThe recall affects the bulk of Territorys on the road, built between February 1 2004 and December 31, 2008.Territory Turbo, Territory Ghia Turbo and the FPV F6X are not included in the recall.Ford Australia spokeswoman, Sinead McAlary, said the problem had affected less than 2 per cent of vehicles but the company was recalling most Territorys to replace the hosesMcAlary said the issue was isolated to the Territory and did not affect Falcon models. The problem relates to the front brake hose, which can wear through, leading to leaking brake fluid that could render the brakes almost useless.Ford is fitting all Territorys with replacement hoses that are stronger and longer, McAlary said.An official Ford statement said that the the rear braking system will still bring the vehicle to a halt within Australian Design Rule requirements. If the vehicle continues to be operated in this condition, a warning light will appear on the instrument cluster to alert the driver that the vehicle's braking system requires attention, the statement said.McAlary said that a Ford investigation had shown that a combination of high mileage on the vehicles, along with frequent cornering at full steering lock, could lead to a problem with the brakes. She said any customers with concerns are advised to contact their nearest Ford Dealer to make arrangements to have their vehicle rectified. The front brake hoses will be replaced free of charge.Related stories:First look: 2009 Ford TerritoryToyota Kluger Vs Ford TerritoryGOT A PROBLEM WITH YOUR CAR? - Ask 'The Guide'

Ford Territory tyre pressure
Answered by Graham Smith · 13 Oct 2011

Follow the placard on the car, the pressure shown on the tyre sidewall is the maximum inflation pressure it can withstand, it's got nothing to do with the pressure you should run on your car.

Dangerous territory
Answered by Carsguide.com.au · 02 Jan 2009

IT IS time Ford recalled these cars and replaced the brake hoses to ensure the danger is eliminated. It's very fortunate no one has been killed as a result of these failures. A veteran of the industry, a brake expert, is astounded that it hasn't been the subject of a recall.

Ford Territory housing mount

Check the warranty document first, then ask the insurance company to show the provision that states it only covers "common" failures. Sounds like BS to me.

Territory on gas
Answered by Graham Smith · 04 Oct 2007

THE LPG tank is generally mounted under the Territory where the spare wheel is. The spare is then mounted on the side in the back of the cabin. That's no problem for a five-seater, but it does present a problem for a seven-seater. You really need a swing-away spare wheel mounting to hang the spare on the rear. Phone the offroad specialists who might be able to supply you with an appropriate bracket. There shouldn't be any issue with the engine, but be aware Ford doesn't recommend converting its cars and your warranty will be affected.

Brake even
Answered by CarsGuide team · 09 Apr 2009

FORD announced on March 27 it was recalling all Territorys to replace the front brake hoses, so take your car back to your dealer and they should do the work according to the recall.

Knocking sound in Ford Territory
Answered by Graham Smith · 30 Jun 2011

Without being able to hear the noise you complain of it's hard to say what it might be, but the possibilities are valve lifters or piston slap. Because your dealer and Ford have been unhelpful, the dealer seems to have wiped their hands of the problem, seek independent advice from a reputable mechanic and take that advice back to the dealer in the hope they will address your concern.

Time to take steps
Answered by Graham Smith · 09 Oct 2009

FOLLOW the dealer's advice to start with. When you finish washing your car open the doors and let any excess soap drain away, and finally chamois the steps and surrounding area dry. You could also consult a four-wheel-drive specialist and see what they do to retain the bright appearance of the side steps on other cars. If you feel you want to continue dealing with Ford, there's no other way but to maintain the rage and certainly put your complaints down in writing and send them to the company.

Territory towing capability
Answered by Graham Smith · 22 Apr 2010

The Territory TX does have a transmission oil cooler, which is suitable for normal driving, but when towing it's best to fit an external cooler that will cope with the extra heat generated under the load of a caravan or trailer on the back. The Ford kit you mention will do the job and Ford dealers should be able to fit it for you, if not any competent auto transmission mechanic will be able to supply and fit the sort of cooler you need. The cost will be about $500 fitted. It woul d also be a good idea to beef up the rear suspension of the Territory if you plan to tow and you say you do. Depending on the weight you would be towing you might want to think of fitting uprated rear springs, uprated gas shocks and even load- assist airbags. All can be supplied by Pedders at a cost of around $1400. At the same time they could inspect the diff bushes, rear arm mounts and shock bushes, all known trouble spots on the Territory.
