At the very top of the 1.4-litre Golf line-up sits the R-Line.

You don’t get any extra performance, as the R-Line stays with the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine with its 110kW and 250Nm. But with a clever eight-speed automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive for efficiency, the R-Line still has plenty of performance and superb refinement.

What you do get for the extra money is more standard kit including selectable drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual), adaptive steering, leather upholstery and heated and ventilated front seats. Even so, the facelifted R-Line still represents a big price jump over the previous R-Line.

Inside, the clean, crisp design of the new Golf is retained, and with it the simplified driver interface for some of the controls and functions.

The luggage space is a handy 374 litres and the rear seat folds 60:40 and also features a ski-port for maximum flexibility and practicality.

VW claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 6.3 litres per 100km for the R-Line, although it does require 95-octane fuel, bumping running costs a little.

The Golf R-Line carries VW’s standard five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and service intervals are every 12 months or 15,000km whichever comes first.

Morley’s attentions turned to cars and motoring fairly early on in his life. The realisation that the most complex motor vehicle was easier to both understand and control than the simplest human-being, set his career in motion. Growing up in the country gave the young Morley a form of motoring freedom unmatched these days, as well as many trees to dodge. With a background in newspapers, the move to motoring journalism was no less logical than Clive Palmer’s move into politics, and at times, at least as funny.
