The MG4 Essence 64 sits in the middle of the Chinese brand’s electric small car range, priced at $47,990 (plus on-road costs) and offering more performance and equipment.

On top of the standard equipment on the Excite model - which includes LED lights a 7.0-inch digital instrument panel and 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - the Essence adds a six-speaker sound system, wireless smartphone charging pad and 18-inch alloy wheels with aero covers.

The Essence 64 has a 150kW electric motor and 64kWh battery, which provides a range of 430km. All models in the MG4 line-up are equipped with vehicle-to-lead technology, which means you can draw power from the car to power external appliances.

The cabin is spacious, with good room front and back, and the Essence 64 steps it up from the Excite models with a combination of leather and fabric upholstery, a heated steering wheel and heated seats.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
