The third step up the Mazda CX-30 model range is the Touring, and it marks an important point in terms of spec and options for buyers.

The Touring comes with the choice of the G20 2.0-litre petrol engine (114kW/200Nm) with 2WD and a six-speed auto, or the G25 2.5-litre petrol engine with 139kW and 252Nm - plus it is available with the choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

The G20 Touring costs $34,990 plus on-road costs and comes with a slightly different grille to help differentiate it from the Evolve, along with additional spec items like advanced keyless entry, electric front seat adjustment, front parking sensors, auto-dimming rearview mirror and a sunglass storage box. This model marks the point where black leather is standard, too.

That’s above and beyond the list of stuff you get in the lower grades, such as 18-inch wheels, LED headlights with halogen daytime running lights, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a colour head-up display, an 8.8-inch multimedia system with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity (but no touchscreen), eight speaker stereo, and a 7.0-inch driver information display.

The G25 Touring 2WD priced from $36,490 (plus on-roads), and just nets you that bigger engine. If you think you need all-wheel drive, you’ll have to pay $38,490 (plus on-roads).

Safety spec for all CX-30 models is strong. There’s standard auto emergency braking (AEB) system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, auto high-beam headlights, rear cross traffic alert, traffic sign recognition and driver drowsiness warning. All CX-30 models have six airbags (dual front, front side, curtain).

There’s also an optional safety pack, known as Vision Technology ($1300 on Touring models) which comprises a 360-degree surround view camera, front parking sensors, a system called Cruising and Traffic support (with a degree of semi-autonomous driving at lower speeds), a driver monitoring camera and front cross traffic alert.
