The Focus Active is an SUV-inspired hatchback with high-riding off-road touches. It is priced from $29,990 and sits in the middle of the Focus range.

Although the Active gains suspension raised by 34mm, bashplates and black plastic wheel-arch extensions much in the vein of the Subaru XV, there is no AWD system available.

The Active instead maintains the same front-wheel drive layout as the rest of the Focus range, powered by a 134kW/240Nm three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. All Focuses have eight-speed torque converter transmissions and Ford rates fuel consumption at 6.4L/100km.

The Active gains bespoke 17-inch alloys over the base-model Trend that are different from the ones available on the ST-Line, and it also gains roof-rails more soft interior finishes. The Active's traction control also gains two more modes - Slippery (for snow and ice) and Trail (for sand, gravel and dirt).

Other than that, the Active has largely the same specification as the ST-Line, with dual-zone climate control, LED fog lights, auto-folding and heated wing-mirrors, keyless entry with push-start a Qi (Chee) wireless phone charging pad and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

The Active has automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist (LKAS) with lane departure warning (LDW), a 180-degree reversing camera and rear parking sensors as standard.

Active cruise control with stop & go, blind spot monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert can be added as part of a safety pack priced at $1250.

The Focus range was awarded a maximum five ANCAP safety stars as of December 2018.

Tom’s way into motoring journalism was anything but straightforward despite annoying his parents to no end as a child by identifying makes and models with ease, and acquiring a large collection of Matchbox models. Other interests took over in the intervening years, including tinkering with electronics and computers, and an interest in the past, which eventually culminated in a Bachelor of Arts and Science from the University Of Sydney with a major in Ancient History. During this time, Tom was exposed to all sorts of cars by working as a valet and eventually the Bell Captain at The Star casino in Sydney. He then went on another side-quest, studying law at Macquarie University before applying for a job at CarsGuide. After being hired Tom worked his way up the ranks in a variety of roles and refined his craft, now serving as CarsGuide's Deputy News Editor, with special interests in new technologies and electric vehicles, as well as emerging trends from China. Tom has been recognised by his peers as the EV Journalist of the Year at the 2026 Newspress Australia Awards. He’s personally owned a selection of wheels from a 1981 Holden Gemini to a 2009 Ford Falcon, through to his current 2011 Subaru Forester and many others in between.
