The BMW 118d has the only diesel engine in the 1 Series hatchback range and its also one of the most affordable cars in the line-up with its list price $44,990.

The 118d isn’t the cheapest in the range, though – that award goes to the 118i, which is $5000 and has a petrol engine. Both cars, however, share the same standard features, which include a 6.5-inch display, with sat nav, reversing camera, six-speaker stereo, a digital radio and air-conditioning.

The 118d comes standard with the 'Sport Line' package, too, which adds 16-inch light alloy wheels and LED headlights, while in the cabin it adds cloth upholstery sports seats and a leather sports steering wheel, high gloss black trim and BMW scuff plates.

A 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel moves the 118d and makes 110kW of power and heaps of torque at 320Nm.

According to BMW, this frugal engine uses just 4.2L/100km over a combination of urban and open roads. The transmission is a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic.

The 118i has the maximum five-star ANCAP rating awarded in 2011. Coming standard is AEB (city) with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning.

Richard Berry
Senior Journalist
Richard had wanted to be an astrophysicist since he was a small child. He was so determined that he made it through two years of a physics degree, despite zero mathematical ability. Unable to build a laser in an exam and failing to solve the theoretical challenge of keeping a satellite in orbit, his professor noted the success Richard was enjoying in the drama and writing courses he had been doing on the side. Even though Richard couldn’t see how a degree in story-telling and pretending would ever get him a job, he completed one anyway. Richard has since been a best-selling author and a journalist for 20 years, writing about science, music, finance, cars, TV, art, film, cars, theatre, architecture, food, and cars. He also really likes cars, and has owned an HQ ute, Citroen 2CV, XW Falcon, CV8 Monaro and currently, a 1951 Ford Tudor. A husband and dad, Richard’s hobbies also include astronomy.
