Mazda has confirmed it’s reentering the electric vehicle (EV) market in Australia with the 6e electric liftback.

Pitched as an electric successor to the venerable Mazda 6 sedan and wagon, the Mazda 6e will launch in Australia in the second quarter of 2026.

Mazda hasn’t released the full details for the 6e line-up just yet, but it has announced some key points.

The Mazda 6e will have a starting price that’s lower than $55,000 before on-road costs.

The current entry-level Tesla Model 3 RWD starts at $54,900 before on-road costs and the entry-level BYD Seal Dynamic starts at $46,990 before on-road costs.

At this stage it’s uncertain how many trim levels will be offered locally.

All versions will be powered by a 190kW rear-mounted electric motor, which is fed by a 78kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery.

Mazda claims the 6e will have over 500km of range, according to an undisclosed testing cycle, and be able to charge from 30 to 80 per cent in 15 minutes.

In other markets there is a long range version of the 6e with a larger 80kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery offering up to 552km of WLTP range, as well as smaller LFP units.

Additionally, there are range-extender versions of the Mazda 6e in China, where it’s known as the EZ-6. Mazda Australia Managing Director Vinesh Bhindi confirmed the company isn’t looking at bringing in these versions of the car.

There’s also an SUV counterpart called the EZ-60 that’s confirmed for the Chinese market. At this stage this car hasn’t been confirmed for export markets, nor right-hand drive production so it’s unclear if it will come to Australia.

Bhindi noted the introduction of this electric SUV is “high on our agenda”, but the former two “hurdles” need to be overcome.

The Mazda 6e won’t be the brand’s first EV in Australia. This crown goes to the quirky MX-30 Electric crossover SUV, which was on sale locally from 2021 to 2023.

It was dubbed a niche offering as it only offered 200km of claimed electric range due to its 35.5kWh battery pack.

More information on the Mazda 6e’s local pricing and specifications will be detailed closer to its launch in the second quarter of 2026.
