With dual cab ‘pick-up’ versions of its just-released Tasman ute now in local showrooms, Kia has confirmed pricing for cab chassis variants of the much-anticipated newcomer.

Offered in Single-Cab 4x2 and 4x4 grades, as well as Dual-Cab in 4x4 only, the commercially-focused five-model cab chassis line-up includes two trim levels - S and SX.

That leaves the more generously specified SX+, X-Line and X-Pro versions as exclusive dual cab pick-up models.

Kicking off at $38,010, before on-road costs for the S 4x2 entry model, the most affordable Tasman cab chassis is positioned some way above Toyota’s HiLux Workmate Single Cab, a relatively spartan 4x2 cab chassis workhorse matching a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a five-speed manual gearbox for $27,730 BOC (a 37 per cent differential).

Following a modest model year price rise this month, Ford’s entry-level Ranger XL Single Cab cab chassis is in the same ballpark as the base Kia. Powered by a single turbo-diesel matched with a six-speed auto transmission it sits at $37,130 BOC.

Tasman cab chassis models retain the pick-up’s 3.5-tonne braked trailer towing capacity and 350kg tow ball weight rating as well as a factory-fitted ‘Integrated Trailer Brake Controller’.

According to Kia, the ITBC complements the Tasman’s ‘Trailer Stability Assist’ - a trailer sway control element able to automatically apply finite controls “beyond the driver’s capability” to help arrest trailer sway and maintain control of the vehicle.

Kia is also offering a Genuine Accessories tray for Tasman cab chassis models as well as other accessory options including an under-tray drawer, tool box and water tank.

He would then play ‘drivings’, happily heading to destinations unknown for hours on end. He’s since owned many cars, raced a few, and driven (literally) thousands of them at all points of the globe. He’s steered around and across Australia multiple times, spent time as an advanced driving instructor, and had the opportunity to experience rare and valuable classics here and overseas. His time in motoring journalism has included stints at national and international titles including Motor, Wheels and TopGear, and when asked to nominate a career highlight, James says interviewing industry legend Gordon Murray, in the paddock at the 1989 Australian Formula One Grand Prix was amazing, especially as Murray waived away a hovering Ayrton Senna to complete the conversation.
