Cupra range pricing adjusted, with popular models now more expensive

Cupra’s most popular model, the Formentor SUV, has had pricing bumped up by as much as $2000.

Cupra Australia has adjusted its pricing across the range for 2022 with some variants benefiting from a price drop, while the more popular and expensive models have been given price increases.

The most significant changes in the pricing adjustment come for the Cupra Formentor, the brand’s highest-selling model in Australia.

While the most affordable Formentor V has had its price reduced by $700, with entry to the model range now from $49,990 before on-road costs, the VZ, VZe plug-in hybrid, and VZx performance SUV have all had price rises - $1200 for the VZ, and $2000 for the other two.

The changes Cupra is most keen to spruik, however, are the price reductions that the Leon hatchback range benefits from.

While the entry-level Leon V remains a $43,990 offering, the step-up VZ price drops by $1000, now $51,990.

Notable are the Leon VZe plug-in hybrid and VZx hot hatch for their new alignment with the pricing of Cupra’s new electric hatchback, the Born, which all share pricing at $59,990.

To achieve this, Cupra dropped the VZe’s price by $500 and the VZx’s by $1500.

“We have negotiated this at a time when price rises are affecting the whole industry,” said Cupra Australia director Ben Wilks, “including our own SUV range, owing to inflation, supplier cost, and transport increases.”

Cupra has confirmed to CarsGuide that existing orders will remain unchanged by the increased prices, protected as they were priced when the order was placed. However, Cupra says it will "decrease the Leon prices where applicable for existing orders".

The pricing adjustments aren’t accompanied by any specification changes to the range.

In 2022, Cupra sold 690 Formentors, its highest figure yet and 62 per cent of its total 1111 sales for the year. Its larger Ateca SUV sold 234 units, followed by 186 Leons and, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ VFACTS data, one Cupra Born.

While the numbers are comparatively low in the industry, it was Cupra’s first year operating in Australia as a brand that holds somewhat small public awareness outside of Europe, even then owing to its historical link to the Seat brand.
