BYD has confirmed two new flagship models will launch in early 2026 to top out its range in China.

One will be the Sealion 08 large SUV — not to be confused with the Sealion 8, which will launch in Australia in mid-2026.

This is because the locally-delivered Sealion 8 is a re-badged version of the marginally smaller Chinese-market Tang L SUV, re-named to sync up with the company’s naming convention in Australia.

It is also unclear whether the Sealion 08 SUV will be a re-themed version of the Dynasty D SUV the brand debuted earlier in 2025, or whether the brand has decided to re-name its flagship SUV.

The other is the Seal 08 sedan, which serves as the larger and more luxurious sibling to the mid-sized Seal sedan sold in our market.

The two cars were only shown as shadowy silhouettes for now, but are expected to be production versions of the Dynasty D and Ocean S concepts the brand displayed at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2025.

Both are aimed at a higher-end part of the market compared to even the locally-delivered Sealion 8, with the large SUV aiming for luxury-car levels of refinement and technology, challenging more premium Chinese rivals like Zeekr and MG’s IM luxury arm.

Both cars are expected to exceed five meters in length, placing them comfortably in the large segment. Both will feature all of the brand’s high-end technology, such as 1MW DC charging ability that debuted on the Tang L EV earlier in 2025, as well as other new technologies and high-performance features not seen before on BYD models.

In Australia, BYD is targeting a podium finish in 2026 off the back of an expanding range at aggressive price points in more popular new car segments.

The brand has just launched its Atto 1 city hatchback (from $23,990) and Atto 2 small SUV (from $31,990), and it will add the Sealion 5 price-leading plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV (from $33,990) and Sealion 8 three-row SUV in mid-2026.

The locally-delivered Sealion 8 will be BYD’s most expensive model, expected to be priced about $70,000, although it debuts a new performance powertrain, new styling language and higher-end features for the brand.

Other models potentially on the consideration list to boost the brand in 2026 include the Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid station wagon, M9 people mover, and the brand just revealed the Ti7 in the also right-hand drive Thailand as a Hyundai Santa Fe-rivalling boxy PHEV soft-roader.

Of course, for buyers looking for something more, BYD’s Denza premium arm has also debuted recently in Australia with the B5 Prado-sized SUV with similar underpinnings to the runaway success Shark 6 ute, and related LandCruiser-rivalling B8.

That may not be all from the brand, with its ultra-premium YangWang marque also understood to in the works for an Australian launch, with the U9 Range Rover-rivalling large plug-in hybrid SUV likely to be its first model.

Whether BYD’s range expansion will be enough to boost it from its current eighth position in Australia to knocking either Hyundai, Kia, or Ford off the podium remains to be seen.
