BYD's ballistic hot hatch has been updated in China, but there's no news yet on whether this model will make it to Australia.
The brand continues to update the Seal 06 hatchback's performance to add to its range of Seal-branded cars as per a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filing.
The 06 GT is an all-electric hatchback (with the top-spec all-wheel drive version billed as a hot hatch), and we now know next year's version will add two electric motor set ups, which produce either 200kW or 240kW.
Australia only gets one version of the Seal, which is an all-electric mid-size sedan, with a starting price of just under $50,000.
Other new information available on the performance BYD is that it will be 4630mm long, 1880mm wide, 1490mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2820mm.
These dimensions mean the car will be shorter than the sedan as expected, with a longer wheelbase to boost handling performance.
Its design features similar elements to the Australian-delivered Seal, with a sloped bonnet, an angled head light design, and hidden door handles.
The Seal 06 GT will share many many of its sedan interior traits, including a large multimedia touchscreen and digital driver display.
The updated news on the Seal 06 GT comes after initial versions in 160kW/310Nm rear-wheel drive, and 310kW/510Nm all-wheel drive versions have been on sale in the Chinese market.
It is unclear whether the new versions which appear in the ministry filing will replace the base 160kW versions, or simply add to the range, or whether they will feature new interior appointments as part of the update. However, new LiDAR-based safety equipment seems to make the cut.
BYD revealed its first official images and specifications of the Seal 06 GT back in August 2024.
It is unclear whether the BYD Seal 06 GT will come to Australia and it is not currently offered in right-hand drive, but it is anticipated the car is headed to the European market.
BYD will launch four new additions to the Aussie market in 2026, as they target a position in the top three, according to BYD Australia chief operating officer Stephen Collins.
The brand has already launched the Atto 1 small electric hatch and Atto 2 small electric SUV and we already know there will be a Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid mid-sizer and Sealion 8 flagship three-row SUV in 2026.
BYD has sold nearly 46,000 units in Australia this year, which represents a sizeable increase on last year, boosted by the addition of several new and so far successful models to the line-up.
