...
I BOUGHT a new Honda Jazz in 2003 and I was very happy with it until a couple of weeks after the warranty expired. I thought I could hear an unusual noise, which I finally had confirmed a few weeks ago as coming from the gearbox bearings. The car has done only 43,000km so you can imagine I am not happy at all. Honda has agreed to pay for the parts and half of the labour costs. I'm told I'm very lucky that Honda is doing this much and that I really should have taken up the extended warranty. I really didn't think I should need to pay anything with a new car. Do you feel, as I do, that this is unacceptable.

YES, I do think this is unacceptable. It is common practice by car companies in situations like yours to offer to pay for the parts and sometimes part of the labour, but as your car has done only 43,000km I think Honda should cover the entire cost of the repair. For a gearbox to fail at such a low mileage is most unusual and you would suspect it is because of a manufacturing fault. Forget about the dealer, go straight to Honda and ask for a better deal.
