Yes, it’s hard to believe a car nutter like myself has NEVER been go-karting.

I was long overdue for a spin in a go-kart, but I wanted my first time to be special and something a little different.

While racing around on your bum with a buzzing engine behind you sounds like great fun, there’s one element that takes go-karting to the next level: drifting.

Located next door to the Autowerks garage in downtown Bangkok, Drift Impact Park has an indoor karting circuit where the goal is to drift yourself around the track.

Combining long drifts with quick lap times results in more points and spinning out takes them away. Obviously, the higher the score, the better.

The karts are electric rather than petrol-powered, so the instant torque is a real kick to the face.

They also don’t have a handbrake because the circuit has been polished three times over, so initiating a drift is as easy as turning in and giving it a boot full. In theory anyway.

Naturally, I was rubbish at it and my best score was only 422 points, while the high score is 984.

Luckily, I was shown how it's done by the guys from Autowerks, who really put me to shame.

It’s safe to say I won’t be getting a call up to star in the next Fast and Furious movie.

Is go-kart drifting the best thing since sliced bread? Let us know in the comments.

Following a passion shared by his father and grandfather, Mitchell’s love of cars really kicked off with his Godfather’s purchase of a new Mazda RX-8. Exposure to that car changed his world forever, leading to an RX-7 obsession. To feed his automotive addiction, Mitchell decided to become a motoring journalist and made his mark at several high-profile motoring publications before landing at CarsGuide. While he is a rotary loyalist, Mitchell also has a massive love for Aussie muscle cars, and dreams of one day getting behind the wheel of a Charger R/T E49 (if anyone will let him). His other passions include Queensland, and spending Saturdays with the boys.
