Ever heard of it? Well you're about to.

Halfway Hangs has been around since 2014 and is held at Valla Beach, halfway between Brisbane and Sydney (hence the event's name).

Car enthusiasts from Queensland, New South Wales, Canberra and even South Australia come to the meet to show off their cars, make new friends and drift up a storm.

StreetKarnage is the organiser of Halfway Hangs and claims the event is simple; rad people, rad cars and rad vibes. I went to see if it lives up to this title.

Rad people

Everyone seems to be mates here and its easy to make new friends.

You can go up to an owner of any car, ask them what modifications they’ve made, and you can end up talking for hours about a turbo or why they've dropped a Nissan SR20 engine into a BMW E21.

Rad cars

If you’re new to Halfway Hangs, you may think this is exclusively a JDM event however, any type of car is welcomed.

At the show and shine on Friday there were four BMW 3-series on display in a crowd of Nissan Silvias and Toyota Corollas.

Despite the lack of diversity, every car is different under the skin, you won’t find two identical Silvia S13s, as each sports car have been modified to the owner's unique taste.

Rad vibes

The environment of Halfway Hangs is relaxed and as already mentioned, the people are kind and accepting.

On Saturday, the drifting is a bit more serious for the drivers as safety is placed above everything else. No one wants the day ruined by someone getting hurt (which almost happened to J3 and I).

As a car enthusiast, I suggest checking Halfway Hangs out. It’s still a relatively small event but is getting bigger and better each year.

After experiencing it once, I’m sure I’ll be back again in 2019.

Following a passion shared by his father and grandfather, Mitchell’s love of cars really kicked off with his Godfather’s purchase of a new Mazda RX-8. Exposure to that car changed his world forever, leading to an RX-7 obsession. To feed his automotive addiction, Mitchell decided to become a motoring journalist and made his mark at several high-profile motoring publications before landing at CarsGuide. While he is a rotary loyalist, Mitchell also has a massive love for Aussie muscle cars, and dreams of one day getting behind the wheel of a Charger R/T E49 (if anyone will let him). His other passions include Queensland, and spending Saturdays with the boys.
