Mercedes CLA Review, For Sale, Models, Specs & News in Australia

FROM $66,500

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is a coupe interpretation of Mercedes-Benz’s smallest A-Class luxury hatch.

First introduced in 2013 and replaced in 2020 with a new generation, it started a niche now combated by the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. Distinct from the A-Class sedan, the CLA has a more slippery profile reminiscent of a two-door coupe, so says Mercedes.

A variety of engines from a Renault-twinned 1.3-litre turbo right up to hi-po 310kW AMG-fettled ‘45’ variants are offered.

The line-up currently starts at $66,500 for the CLA-Class CLA 180 and ranges through to $91,300 for the range-topping CLA-Class CLA 350 4Matic Electric.

Front-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz?

It's definitely a real Benz in all the important areas, from design and safety to quality, and front-wheel drive means better packaging with more interior space and the ability to make the car more affordable. Every car maker is moving to front-wheel drive for efficiency, even BMW which won its reputation as a driver's brand with its rear-drive cars.

Engine in CLA powerful enough?

The basic CLA has 115kW and, more importantly, 250Nm. For a non-sporty driver, helped by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, that should be more than enough.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Interior

For Latin buffs the Mercedes-Benz CLA CLA’s interior treatment is minimus extremus, the multi-screen ‘MBUX’ array in the CLA220 we drove dominating the front part of the stripped back cabin. From an ergonomic point-of-view, there are no physical controls for ventilation and the only non-digital audio control is on the steering wheel. But aesthetically, the cabin is clean and simple with touches like ‘floating’ door armrests and a gently rounded front centre console adding to an overall relaxed atmosphere.
