CX-3 too pricey?
Answered by Paul Gover · 06 Jul 2015

The starting price of the CX-3 is cheaper than its rivals at $19,990, so it should not be as expensive as you think. Of your other three, the S-Cross is boring but the only one I would remotely recommend.

Should I buy a Audi Q3 or Mazda CX-5 for my retirement?
Answered by Paul Gover · 08 Jun 2015

You should never just buy a badge. The CX-5 is a better car, and considerably better value, than the Audi Q3. It's best in the class, gets The Tick from me, and is far better value than many prestige SUVs.

Best car for carrying weekend toys?
Answered by Paul Gover · 22 Jun 2015

The Freelander is well past its use-by date and both the CX-3 and XV could be too small in the back for his needs. He should try to stretch to a Mazda CX-5, which is still best in class.

Diesel or petrol SUV?
Answered by Paul Gover · 22 Jun 2015

The advantage of the Sorento is that it's a seven-seater, so it will have more space for a big trip. Do not go for diesel unless you travel more than 30,000km a year, otherwise it will take too long to recoup the extra cost of the engine.

Tips for a first car-buyer
Answered by Graham Smith · 03 Jul 2015

You've chosen a good brand in Mazda, and good models in the 2 and 3. Both are good cars and give little trouble, so you can't go far wrong with either one. There are other brands as well, but I would recommend that you stick with Japanese brands and not be tempted by European cars, which can be expensive to service and repair. Look for a car in good condition and well presented both inside and out, a car that drives smoothly, and doesn't have any odd noises or vibrations. Don't take any notice of the salesmen trying to sell you a car; they're just trying to relieve you of your money and some will tell you anything to make that happen. If you can't take a trusted friend along to help you assess a car, consider getting the NRMA to check it for you.

Is AEB worth it?
Answered by Paul Gover · 06 Jul 2015

If safety is important you should order it and be prepared to wait because it is worthwhile. Don't let the dealer try to get you to buy something in stock instead.

Trading up to an SUV
Answered by Paul Gover · 29 Jun 2015

The CX-5 is a clear winner for what you want and is virtually a weekly recipient of The Tick.

Ford Mondeo 2015: Is it a good choice?
Answered by Carsguide.com.au · 06 Jul 2015

I think the new Mondeo has lost its mojo. It's nice enough, but not as good as I expected. Personally, I rate it behind the Mazda6 which gets The Tick.

What's the best $10,000 second-hand small car?
Answered by Paul Gover · 06 Jul 2015

I would not buy a Golf in the second-hand $10,000 range. The Mazda3 is the best car but he'll probably get better value in a Swift, as it's a size smaller. Buying private will mean better value, but ensure he gets an independent mechanical check.

Isuzu MU-X 2015: Is it suitable for towing?
Answered by Graham Smith · 12 Jun 2015

The MU-X is rated to tow 3000 kg, which is well above the 2100 kg you say your caravan weighs. On that basis it would seem to be well suited to your towing needs.
