Best SUV under $25k?

Answered by CarsGuide 3 Feb 2017

The Trax is good value for money and stacks up well against all comers in the class. The 1.4 turbo is the best engine, and it has a conventional auto instead of a CVT that most of its rivals have. Others to look at are the Suzuki S-Cross, Ford Kuga, Nissan Qashqai, Mazda CX-5 and Subaru XV.

Recommendations for a family SUV?

Answered by CarsGuide 21 Oct 2016

Your need for low maintenance rules out the Europeans, Jeeps are popular but aren't as reliable as I think they should be, leaving you with the Japanese and Korean brands. The cars I would suggest you look at are the Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester and Honda CR-V.

Best replacement for a Liberty Wagon?

Answered by CarsGuide 7 Oct 2016

With 2000 kg towing capacity the Discovery Sport has the towing capacity you want, it's more than the CX-5, and it's not limited to 80 km/h like the Subaru is. That's a big plus. The only criticisms we've heard about are some niggling interior fit and finish issues, and one or two electrical gremlins. The Land Rover also has more ground clearance than the CX-5 and a traction control system better set up for actual off-road work.

Can you recommend an SUV for my family?

Answered by CarsGuide 9 Sep 2016

Both are well suited to everyday use around town. They're comfortable, fuel-efficient and safe. The Dualis is a little cheaper than the Sportage, but I would definitely go for the Sportage. I would expect them to have a similar resale value when it comes time to sell, but the reputation of the Sportage for quality and reliability would make it easier to move on.

Mazda CX-5: Is there a release date for a new model?

Answered by CarsGuide 5 Sep 2016

There is nothing official from Mazda Australia but the CX-5 is now more than four years old and that points to a new replacement in the second half of next year. If you're buying now, ensure you also test drive the new Kia Sportage — I give it The Tick and rate it ahead of the CX-5.

What is the best mid-size SUV for a new family?

Answered by CarsGuide 6 Jun 2016

The Mazda is an excellent choice but also test drive the Sportage. Buy a fully loaded car for the safety gear but sunroofs and big alloys aren’t worthwhile. A pre-registered 2015 car with low kilometres is a smart way to buy.

Are SUVs better for older drivers?

Answered by CarsGuide 6 May 2016

Yes, I agree that SUVs are a good choice of vehicle for older drivers; as you say they afford you a good view of the road ahead and your surroundings, and they're easier to get in and out of. They are, however, larger and that can make them awkward for older drivers who have a greater tendency to bump into things. If you choose an SUV the CX-5 is a good one. Should you decide against the SUV you could look at the Mazda 6, Subaru Liberty, Toyota Camry, Kia Optima or Honda Accord. All are good cars. Another to think about is the Subaru Outback, a high-riding version of the Liberty.

Mazda CX-5: Engine oil problem

Answered by CarsGuide 28 Mar 2016

Mazda released a so-called “fix” for the problem you have. It involves a new dipstick and modified software for the diesel particulate filter. The operation of the DPF was said to be the cause of the problem according to a Mazda spokesman when the “fix” was released. Go to your dealer and have the rework done.
