Best medium sized SUV for around $40,000?

I'm looking for a medium-sized SUV that drives better and has more comfort than my 2011 Hyundai ix35 for around $40-45,000. I'm interested in all makes and all models. Which would you pick?

In order, I would suggest you consider the VW Tiguan, Kia Sportage, and Mazda CX-5. All are reliable, drive nicely, and are well equipped.
