The 35 TFSI is the middle-grade of the three variant second-generation A1 range, wearing an MSRP of $35,290.

It is powered by a new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (110kW/250Nm) which features cylinder-on-demand technology, able to deactivate two of its cylinders when cruising.

The petrol particulate filter (PPF) available with this engine in Europe has been stripped out of Australian-delivered cars due to our lax fuel quality standards.

The new A1 has a 335-litre boot (VDA) that is 65 litres more than the previous A1.

The 35 TFSI has a claimed/combined fuel usage figure of 5.8L/100km and consumes 95 RON premium petrol.

Standard spec on the 35 TFSI includes, a 10.25-inch digital dashboard, an 8.8-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and digital radio, 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and push-start, interior ambient lighting, auto-dimming rear vision mirror, an armrest centre console, and a wireless phone charging bay.

Safety features include auto emergency braking (AEB) lane keep assist (LKAS) with lane departure warning (LDW), six airbags and the expected stability and brake controls. The A1 range will launch with a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Tom’s way into motoring journalism was anything but straightforward despite annoying his parents to no end as a child by identifying makes and models with ease, and acquiring a large collection of Matchbox models. Other interests took over in the intervening years, including tinkering with electronics and computers, and an interest in the past, which eventually culminated in a Bachelor of Arts and Science from the University Of Sydney with a major in Ancient History. During this time, Tom was exposed to all sorts of cars by working as a valet and eventually the Bell Captain at The Star casino in Sydney. He then went on another side-quest, studying law at Macquarie University before applying for a job at CarsGuide. After being hired Tom worked his way up the ranks in a variety of roles and refined his craft, now serving as CarsGuide's Deputy News Editor, with special interests in new technologies and electric vehicles, as well as emerging trends from China.
