    Audi's baby A1 hatchback is designed for one thing and one thing only; getting warm bodies into a car adorned with the four rings. As a city runabout it has its charms, and it's a nice enough little car to drive.

    The truth of the Volkswagen Polo-based A1 is that, with prices starting at $39,200 for the A1 35 Tfsi and topping of at $50,800 for the A1 40 Tfsi S Line, it's expensive for its size, and the cheaper it is, the less you get.

    The A1 is offered locally with a variety of engines, including a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo, a 1.4-litre petrol and a 1.8-litre petrol. The all-wheel drive S1 hot hatch was dropped for the A1's second generation, as the VW Group MQB A0 platform on which it sits cannot support AWD in the A1's configuration.

    Audi A1 or VW Golf?

    Audi was caught up in the same DSG automatic transmission problems that afflicted VW, but you would hope that those problems have been sorted out on the later models such as the 2015 car you're looking to buy. Apart from that doubt the A1 is generally a sound car. As for servicing costs the A1 is about the same as the VW.
