Renault has just given the Arkana a mid-life update and for now the Techno is the cheapest variant in the line-up starting at $41,000, before on-road costs and replacing the former Intens grade. A new entry-level Evolution grade will arrive at a later date, likely to cost $37,500, to replace the old Zen variant.
All variants get Renault's new badge, which debuted on the Megane E-Tech electric SUV earlier this year.
It has 18-inch alloy wheels and LED lighting front and back. Inside there is a 9.3-inch portrait shaped multimedia screen that is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is paired to a 10.25-inch digital driver display.
Seats are wrapped in black leather with synthetic suede accents. The front pair are heated and power adjustable.
There are two cupholders and a few small storage areas up front.
The rear seat feels a little cramped due to the sloping roof and the smaller than average windows. The Arkana wins back points for rear air con vents and USB charging ports, though.
Under the bonnet is a familiar 1.3-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine that powered the pre-update Arkana. Output remains at 115kW and 262Nm. It is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto that drives the front wheels.
The Arkana's transmission isn't the slickest dual-clutch on the market and has a tendency to hesitate and surge at lower speeds. Drivers will need to feather the pedals to reduce the chance of wheel slip.
The Arkana's steering is well weighted and it has excellent body control through the bends with minimal body roll.
It's also well suited to motorway driving, where the Arkana feels planted and stable. Road noise is noticeable at higher speeds, though.
Safety is comprehensive. The Arkana has a maximum five-star ANCAP rating, which is carried over from the older version and it is due to expire in late 2025.
There are six airbags and a wide array of active driver aids.
Servicing is on the expensive side at $2385 over five years, but it smashes the competition with 12 month and 30,000km intervals. Renault covers the Arkana with a five year/unlimited km warranty and five years of roadside assistance is complementary.
On paper the Techno appears the better value with a solid list of standard equipment, it could be worth pocketing the $4000 required to step up into the flashier Esprit Alpine.
