GWM’s all-electric Ora comes in three forms, but the first two are really the same vehicle with the option of a larger battery. The base model and the long range versions, then will be the volume selling Oras. The version with the smaller, 48kW battery and a claimed 320km range, dubbed the Standard Range, costs $43,990, before on-road costs.

It uses a single electric motor and a single-speed transmission to drive the front wheels. In that, the Ora is a fairly conventional vehicle, but it breaks new (or, at least, different) ground in its presentation.

Forget the vanilla small EVs we’ve seen before; the Ora offers a slightly retro style that is perhaps a little derivative, but good fun just the same. The interiors are perhaps even groovier than that with quilted trim and retro switchgear.

Safety is comprehensively covered in the Ora including autonomous emergency brakingactive cruise-controllane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistant (including an emergency function), forward collision warning, collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic alert, door-open warning and road-sign recognition. The Ora also scored a maximum five stars in Euro NCAP testing, but hasn’t been tested here yet.

Morley’s attentions turned to cars and motoring fairly early on in his life. The realisation that the most complex motor vehicle was easier to both understand and control than the simplest human-being, set his career in motion. Growing up in the country gave the young Morley a form of motoring freedom unmatched these days, as well as many trees to dodge. With a background in newspapers, the move to motoring journalism was no less logical than Clive Palmer’s move into politics, and at times, at least as funny.
