MG has finally confirmed pricing for its first large SUV, the QS seven-seater.

After being revealed at the Melbourne motor show earlier this year, the QS is now locked in for a two-variant range, initially with a single 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol drivetrain in either front- or all-wheel drive.

The QS has many lower-cost compact seven-seat rivals from the Mahindra’s XUV700 and Chery’s Tiggo 8 Pro Max, but at nearly five meters (4983mm) long it is well into the large SUV category and goes up against the Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Starting from $46,990 drive-away for the base Excite, the QS represents a new value benchmark in this space, with pricing topping-out at $50,990 for the top-spec Essence.

Both grades are powered by the same 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 153kW/360Nm, paired to a nine-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The base Excite is front-wheel drive, while the top-spec Essence is all-wheel drive.

Standard features on both variants include LED headlights, DRLs and taillights, power adjustable front seats, dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument cluster and multimedia touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat-nav, tri-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and push-start ignition and a power tailgate.

The Excite features 20-inch alloy wheels, cloth seat trim, an eight-speaker audio system, and a black woodgrain interior theme.

The Essence has 21-inch alloys, adding perforated leather seat trim with four-way lumbar support for the front positions, heating and ventilation for the front seats, a memory function for the driver’s seat, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a wireless phone charger, front parking sensors, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, auto high-beams, LED fog lights, and additional drive modes with electronically adjustable suspension settings.

The QS is capable of towing 750kg unbraked or 2000kg braked, while boot space comes in at 203 litres with all seven seats deployed, 517 litres with five seats deployed, or 1052 litres with the rear two rows folded.

Fuel consumption is rated at 8.4L/100km for the FWD Excite, or 8.8L/100km for the AWD Essence. The 2.0-litre turbo engine requires 95RON premium unleaded fuel.

As with all current MGs, the QS is backed by the brand’s new 10-year/250,000km warranty.

A plug-in hybrid variant is expected to follow at some point in the future, although the brand is yet to lock in timing.

MG Australia’s CEO, Peter Ciao said: “It is very exciting for MG to launch our first 7-seat SUV in Australia. People have been asking us when we would be bringing a large SUV to Australia, and it is exciting to confirm the QS is just weeks away.”

“The QS is an important model in MG’s continued growth in Australia. The features included in both variants are of a premium standard and consumers will get more for their money.  Once again we’re proud to deliver exceptional value for Australian motorists. MG is committed to this and you’ll continue to see this in the other exciting models we’ll be launching in Australia this year.”

The QS will be joined by the brand’s first ute, the U9 before the end of 2025, as will two new fully electric premium models from the brand’s IM line in China, the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV.

MG has ambitions to be a top-five brand in Australia by 2027 (it is currently placed seventh). To do so it would need to knock off Hyundai and Mitsubishi, while a top-three ambition by 2030 would see it also knock Kia and Mazda down a place, as things currently stand.
