Popular hatchback axed in Australia!

Hyundai Australia has axed the i30 small hatchback in Australia, despite its place as the second-most popular model in its segment behind the Toyota Corolla.

The 2026 Hyundai i30 hatch will likely be gone from showrooms by the end of its ‘26 model year, though production of the model will cease in December 2025.

A Hyundai Australia spokesperson confirmed the decision to CarsGuide, citing “complexities and costs” related to getting the Czech-built hatchback to Australia.

“i30 MHEV [mild-hybrid] production for the Australian market will cease from December 2025,” they said.

“The decision has been made to discontinue this model due to sourcing complexities and costs out of Europe.”

The i30 N hatch, as well as the i30 Sedan and i30 Sedan N, will carry on, with the N hatch recently having copped a $2000 price increase and the Sedan models built in Ulsan, South Korea.

Hyundai’s spokesperson also confirmed the i20 N hot hatch is on the chopping block, again despite relative popularity in its segment.

“i20 N production for the Australian market will cease from March 2026,” the spokesperson said.

“We have secured a strong final production run to ensure we have enough stock to last through to the end of next year.”

The Hyundai i30 hatch has, up to the end of September this year, sold in 8468 units, putting it behind only the Corolla (14,282 YTD) in the Small hatches (under $45K) category. The Mazda 3 follows closely at 8052 sales.

It’s not the first time a model from Hyundai (or sibling brand Kia) has been culled or left off the menu due to the difficulty of importing from Europe - Kia’s baby electric SUV, the EV2, won’t come to Australia as it’s built in Slovakia.
