Australia get ready for another ute from another brand because Chinese carmaker GAC has confirmed it will bring the production version of its GAC Pickup 01 concept Down Under.

The GAC Pickup 01 concept made its global debut in April at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show and raised eyebrows with its Tesla Cybertruck looks.

The futuristic looking ute is expected to go into production by 2027 and be sold in Australia and a small number of other countries according to GAC.

“As the inaugural product under GAC Commercial Vehicle's 135 Development Strategy, the Pickup 01 will drive industry transformation from utilitarian vehicles to premium intelligent solutions,” GAC said in a statement.

“GAC is accelerating global deployment, initially targeting key markets including Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Chile. Ultimately, the model will empower Chinese brands in global competition while ushering in a new mobility era.”

The United States is not on the list thanks in part to the US imposing high tariffs on Chinese vehicles.

While the Pickup 01 concept looks outrageous towering high on its giant wheels, blocky, angular styling and menacing LED lights much of the futuristic look could make it through to production while meeting local regulations.

The Pickup 01 will be fully electric and the first vehicle to be part of GAC’s Commercial Vehicle division.

Interestingly, GAC announced it would come to Australia through a distributor. When CarsGuide spoke to GAC International General Manager Wei Haigang at the Mobility Live show in Melbourne late last year he confirmed GAC will arrive in the second of 2025, most likely under the Aion sub-brand.

The Aion V electric SUV is expected to spearhead the brand’s arrival followed by more models before GAC-badged models arrive.

The company has taken longer to come to Australia than other Chinese brands such as BYD, MG, Geely, GWM, LDV and Zeekr

Wei said the reason for GAC's late arrival was due to the brand’s decision to focus on growth in China first.

The most recent Chinese ute to arrive in Australia is the BYD Shark 6 which is currently the most popular model in the brand’s line up. In April alone 1293 Shark 6 utes were sold in Australia and 6129 have been sold this year.
