Geely started as a fridge parts business in China in 1986 before moving into motorcycles, then cars in 1997. It was one of the first private carmakers in China and spent years building budget vehicles for domestic buyers. The brand began gaining international attention in the 2000s thanks to its ambition and fast growth.
In 2010, Geely bought Volvo from Ford, marking a major turning point. Since then, it's added Lotus, Proton and a big stake in Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler to its portfolio. Geely’s push into electrification has also seen it launch EV-focused brands like Zeekr and Geometry, plus a tech platform business shared across its group.
Geely now sells cars under its own name in Australia yet, with its influence is growing. Volvo, Polestar and Lotus all benefit from Geely's investment and technology. Its global reach is making it one of the most important players in the industry.
Volvo has factories in Sweden (where its headquarters are), Belguim and China (where its parent company Geely are based). In 2018 Volvo also started manufacturing in the US - their biggest market for the XC90.
