The plug-in hybrid price war is heating up.

Geely has just launched its new Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid family SUV, with prices starting from $37,490 before on-road costs.

This pitches it up against the Chery Tiggo 7 Urban plug-in hybrid which costs $39,990 drive-away and the $42,990 (before on-road costs) BYD Sealion 6 Essential as the cheapest mid-size plug-in hybrids.

It is also slightly cheaper than the fully electric Geely EX5 that starts at $40,990 before on-road costs.

The Starray range has two variants: the entry level Complete and the fully-loaded Inspire.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor, which combine for 160kW and 262Nm sent to the front wheels via a hybrid transmission.

An 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery delivers an all electric driving range of up to 83km via the benchmark WLTP test cycle. Geely said the combined driving range is up to 943km.

The Starray can accept a DC charging rate of 30kW and an AC charging speed of 6.6kW. Geely said the battery can be replenished from 30 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes.

The Complete grade rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, has LED lighting front and back and is packed with safety tech.

Inside there is a 15.4-inch multimedia screen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay, but Android Auto will be available via an over-the-air update in the first quarter of next year.

2026 Geely Starray EM-i

There is a 10.2-inch digital driver display, heated, power adjustable and synthetic leather wrapped seats and a six-speaker stereo.

The $39,990 Inspire variant ups this with 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charging power tailgate, a big head up display, 256 colour ambient lighting and front seat ventilation and driver’s seat memory function.

Customers can order the Starray now with deliveries starting in October.
