How fuel cells pack a punch

There is no conventional internal-combustion engine in the vehicle and gasoline fuel is redundant.

"A fuel cell car is an electric vehicle. The electricity is produced by a fuel cell stack," Honda's fuel cell US spokesman Steve Ellis says.

"A fuel cell stack makes that electricity by combining hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the air, with the only emission being harmless water."

Honda is into its third generation of fuel cell stack development, with more power, less weight and less mass than just seven years ago.

The current stack is 52 litres in volume, weighs 67kg and produces 100kW, compared to the original's 134 litres and 202kg for 60kW.
