Back off BYD! Chery has a new electric car coming but will this SUV come to Australia to join Omoda 5, and fight BYD Atto 3, Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4?

The first official images of the eQ7 follow a leaked set of pictures published on a government website.

Chery has officially shown off an upcoming model after images of it surfaced on a Chinese government document, ahead of its launch later this year.

The electric car, called eQ7, is a mid-sized SUV with few details confirmed yet, but the first question to come to mind given the brand’s relaunch in Australia is whether it will arrive here at any point.

Reports say the eQ7, which sounds confusingly like a cross between an Audi SUV and an electric Mercedes, will have a little over 150kW and be a little larger than a Hyundai Tucson - 4675mm long, 1910mm tall, and 1660mm wide.

It’ll join the compact eQ1 and the eQ5 SUV in China, though reports suggest it may replace the latter.

Don’t expect to see the Chery eQ7 in Australia any time soon, with the brand planning to kick off its electrification journey with the EV version of the car it already has in Australia, the Omoda 5.

A spokesperson for Chery Australia told CarsGuide just weeks ago that it has only a handful of models and variants planned for Australia in 2024, and will keep us informed if that changes.

“Four models - the Omoda 5 EX+, Omoda5 EX+ AWD, Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro - will join the Omoda 5 before the end of 2023, while Chery’s electrification journey will continue in 2024 with the innovative Omoda 5 BEV,” they said.
