2021 Mitsubishi Pajero pricing and specs detailed: Exceed flagship returns to see off Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol rival

The Exceed grade returns to the Mitsubishi Pajero line-up for what is expected to be its last full year on sale.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has updated its Pajero off-roader for what will likely be the last time, reintroducing the top-spec Exceed for the 2021 model year as the ageing SUV slowly winds down production.

The GLX will kick things off at $54,490 before on-road costs as before, while the $59,990 GLS (also unchanged in price) is now the mid-tier grade.

However, the Exceed now sits atop the 2021 Pajero line-up, priced at $62,990, and makes its return after a two-year absence.

All three versions are powered by a 3.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 147kW/441Nm, which sends drive to all four wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission.

Official fuel consumption figures are 9.1 litres per 100km for all Australian Pajeros.

Standard equipment in the GLX carries over from before, with an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto-compatible 7.0-inch multimedia touchscreen, digital radio, cruise control, reversing camera, 17-inch wheels, climate control, automatic high beams, rear air conditioning, keyless entry, side steps and roof rails, and seating for seven.

Stepping up to the GLS adds 18-inch wheels, 12-speaker sound system with subwoofer, electrochromatic rear view mirror, power adjustable front passenger seat, chrome mirror carps, privacy glass, automatic wipers, rear parking sensors, heated front seats and leather-accented seats.

Spending extra on the Exceed though will score buyers leather seats and an electric sunroof with slide and tilt function.

The 2021 Pajero is also fitted with Mitsubishi’s ‘Super Select II’ four-wheel-drive (4WD) system with rear differential lock and four modes – 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc.

As with all new Mitsubishis, the Pajero is eligible for a 10-year/200,000km warranty if serviced at an approved dealership, otherwise the assurance period is halved to five years/100,000km.

It is understood that Mitsubishi has studied the potential to introduce an all-new Pajero, as the current fourth-gen version can be dated back to 2006, but plans did not materialise.

The Japanese brand is believed to have studied a team-up with fellow compatriot and Alliance member Nissan to share costs with the new Patrol, but it was announced the production facility where the Pajero is produced will be shuttered due to COVID-19-related complications.
