THE debate on warming a car up is interesting because I have an auto trans in my Mazda Bravo 2002, and if I select reverse when the engine is cold and running on fast idle, there is a heavy thump in the transmission. I let it idle for at least two minutes before selecting reverse. Mazda says the thump is normal. What do you think?
I agree with Mazda. It's a function of the high idle speed during the cold phase. I wouldn't worry about it and I wouldn't sit for two minutes on a cold morning so I can engage reverse.
