First car advice | small get-around car

I'm looking to buy my first car and I'm confused and unsure. I have two children under seven, with about $8000 to $10,000 budgeted to buy a small get-around car to drive in the suburbs. I like Mazda2s and Mazda3s, but I don't know much about other small cars or even the Mazdas. What would you recommend, when would be the best time to buy, and should I spend a few extra thousand on top to purchase a better or newer model?

You should not be obsessed by one brand, even though Mazda makes good cars, because companies such as Hyundai are excellent and have better warranty. I'd suggest you get some extra in the kitty and go for a new Hyundai i20 or i30.
