Holden Commodore: Engine noise

I was interested to read about Laurie Bright's 'croak' issue with his 2008 Holden Ute in Carsguide. We have a 2008 VE SSV V8 Ute and after around 6000 km it developed what I would describe as 'piston noise/slap' in the left cylinder bank when cold. After three visits to the dealer, including two overnight stays to replicate early morning starts, they "couldn't hear it" and escalated the complaint to the Holden regional manager who also categorically stated that there was no noise. How embarrassing!! As a former mechanic I do know 'piston slap' when I hear it. What I have learnt since is that the noise does virtually disappear after an oil change, but reappears again after around 6000 km and is worse in colder ambient temperatures. The vehicle has now covered 26,000 km and I am very much looking forward to the 30,000 km service, but feeling 'stonewalled' by the dealer.

If you feel it is a problem, and the presence of piston slap is not necessarily a problem in itself, you should keep meticulous records of your dealings with the dealer and Holden in case it does escalate into an issue that needs addressing. In that case you would be well armed with the information needed to support your case for Holden to act.
