Leapmotor is a Chinese electric car brand founded in 2015 by Zhejiang-based tech company Dahua. It launched its first EV, the quirky-looking S01 coupe, in 2019. Leapmotor quickly shifted focus to compact city cars and SUVs, where most buyers are.
The company stands out for building much of its EV tech in-house, including motors and self-developed autonomous systems. That approach has helped it lower costs and speed up development. Leapmotor now offers several models in China, including the T03 hatchback and C10 SUV.
In 2023, global auto giant Stellantis took a stake in Leapmotor and backed its international expansion. The first overseas markets were in Europe, with Australia following. Leapmotor’s pitch is simple. Affordable electric cars with decent tech and clean design. While brand awareness is low here, It’s one of several Chinese brands aiming to grow fast outside China.
