The Volvo ES90 large sedan debuted globally in early 2025 as the flagship electric successor to the S90. It marks a significant shift for the Swedish brand as its first dedicated electric passenger car. Built on the SPA2 platform shared with the EX90 SUV, this model aims to combine the elegance of a traditional four-door with the practicality of a fastback.
Australian deliveries for the Volvo ES90 began in early 2026 with a focus on high tech features and sustainable materials. Locally, the range launched with single-motor rear-wheel-drive variants featuring a 92kWh battery. The sedan uses an 800V electrical architecture for faster charging times. It is the second vehicle to use the Volvo Superset tech stack which allows for continuous over-the-air software updates.
In overseas markets like China, the model is produced at the Chengdu plant and sometimes referred to by its internal code V551. While dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions are available internationally, the initial Australian line up prioritised efficiency and range. This model effectively replaces both the S60 and S90 to become the sole sedan in Volvo Australia's increasingly SUV-heavy showroom.

Volvo offers the ES90 in seven colours - 'Onyx Black', 'Crystal White', 'Denim Blue', 'Vapour Grey', 'Aurora Silver', 'Sand Dune' and 'Mulberry Red'.
The Volvo ES90 Ultra comes equipped with adaptive air suspension, 22-inch alloy wheels, a comprehensive safety package, as well as an electrochromic panoramic roof, a smart key you can add to your phone, 'Nordico' synthetic leather upholstery and a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
The Volvo ES90 is a great example of the brand's style evolution. The cabin is very stylish, with highlights including light coloured wood (at least in our test car) that give it a unique Scandinavian look.
The Volvo ES90 Single Motor is powered by a single, rear-mounted electric motor that drives the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. It makes 245kW of power and 480Nm of torque.

The Volvo ES90 is a five-seat sedan/liftback with good room in the front and rear seats. This is thanks to the flat floor, while the glass roof allows plenty of light to create more feeling of space.

The boot of the Volvo ES90 measures 424 litres, and obviously it’s very easy to access via the power liftgate. But it’s still not as big as an SUV, the EX90 offers up 655 litres of space in its five-seat configuration.
Volvo claims the ES90 Single Motor can handle the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.6 seconds. In keeping with its safety ethos, the top speed is limited to 180km/h.
Built on Volvo’s 800-volt electrical architecture, the first Volvo to feature the technology, the ES90 is powered by a 92kWh battery that provides up to 554km of driving range on a single charge.
