Prado diesel engine failure concern
Answered by Graham Smith · 08 Aug 2014

The affected models were built between June 2004 and October 2007, so you should be wary of buying a 2005 model. There shouldn’t be a problem if the car has been serviced correctly and the fuel-injector seals have been changed as they are supposed to be, so check for a service record. If there isn’t one, or you would like to be sure about the car you’re buying have a mechanic drop the sump and inspect the oil pickup for an accumulation of carbon.

Solution to convex mirrors

Convex mirrors are not unsafe, they just need the driver to take a different view.

Prado engine failure
Answered by Carsguide.com.au · 29 Aug 2014

You could make a claim for the cost of the 120,000 km service to be refunded, because it wasn’t done correctly, but you don't have much of a case for the engine repair. As the previous owner serviced the car and not Toyota, and the seals weren’t changed, Toyota has a perfect out.

Toyota RAV4 2012: Exhaust fumes inside cabin?
Answered by Graham Smith · 08 Aug 2014

It’s possibly coming in through the rear of the car, so check the rear door seal and any other seals that might be allowing the exhaust fumes in.

Toyota Camry 1999: Boring but reliable

Boring and reliable works for me and tens of thousands of happy Camry owners obviously concur.

Ranger, Amarok, Navara or Colorado?
Answered by Paul Gover · 25 Aug 2014

The Ranger gets The Tick and is a clear winner from the Amarok. The all-new Navara is not even close. But we're expecting a new Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota HiLux in the first half of 2015, so check back nearer then.

Focus or Cerato to replace Aurion?
Answered by Paul Gover · 04 Aug 2014

The Kia gets The Tick from me, because it’s better value but also because of the excellent suspension work done by Aussie guru and Carsguide friend Graeme Gambold.

Toyota Corolla 2013: Squeaking brakes
Answered by Graham Smith · 22 Aug 2014

There are a number of things that could be causing the brakes to squeak. The best thing to do is to take the car back to the dealer and insist on having it fixed. It would appear that the dealer has not properly investigated the noise; he seems to have been guessing.

Toyota Kluger 2014: Warranty rattle clause?
Answered by Graham Smith · 08 Aug 2014

It’s the first I have heard of a “rattle” clause. If that is the case it is totally unacceptable. Their injectors are dodgy and they should cover the cost of replacing them. If they refuse to come to the party and continue to stick to their laughable “rattle” clause ask them to show you the clause in the warranty document that came with your car.
